transcontinental: something that goes across the continent
immigrant: someone who comes to live in a country from somewhere else in the world
invention: something that has been made for the first time
port: a place for ships to dock and pick up goods or passengers
Communities Grow
How did California change during and after the gold rush?
1. Many people came to California and made money from something other than gold
Most people didn't find any ________
Californians found other ways to make money. Like:
1. Levi _________ - made pants = jeans!
2. Domingo _________ - made chocolate
2. People developed new ways to travel and communicate
A. Telegraph lines helped communication with California, but still couldn't move goods & people quickly
B. Transcontinental Railroad

"Big Four" started/ paid for Central Pacific Railroad Company
One side of the railroad started in Sacramento in 1863,
many immigrants came from China to help build the railroad
Union Pacific workers built westward
They met in Utah in 1869
Changes from the railroad:
1. Many people moved to California
2. business grew quickly
3. Chinese immigrants started businesses there
1870 - trains brought people and goods to Sacramento - boats would carry the goods to San Francisco down the Sacramento River
1876 a railroad connected San Francisco & Los Angeles, then another RR connected LA with the Middle West
lots of people came to Ca to buy land & they grew citrus fruits (like oranges & lemons)
in the late 1800s refrigerated railroad cars allowed these farmers to ship their oranges & lemons to the east coast
1899 LA leaders began building a larger port, the town of San Pedro became part of LA, waterways were made deeper and wider (for big ships) & new docks were added
