SS Ch 6 Lesson 2: The Story Of San Jose

Vocabulary:

public property: property (building) used by all people, like a library, parks, beaches
private property: property that belongs to one person like houses, businesses, & farms
industry: type of business
technology: new inventions people use every day


How has San Jose grown and changed?
1st people: Ohlone indians They ate berries, acorns, vegetables, rabbits, dear, & antelope

1700s Spanish land was good for farming & raising cattle, farms provided food & cattle for nearby presidios

1846-1849 population boom because of gold rush
1850 San Jose pop. 4,000
March 27, 1850 San Jose 1st official city in CA, used to be the capital of Ca.
1860's changes in San Jose: streets were improved, a streetcar line was built, a courthouse & hotels were added, & the railroad between San Jose & San Francisco was finished

1876 San Jose - fruit shipping capital of Ca

1940s 1/2 million military people came to Ca during World War II, large businesses for spacecraft & computers moved into the area
Silicon Valley - new nickname for San Jose / Santa Clara Valley

NOW - 3rd largest city in Ca, many people moved there for computer jobs & pop. close to 1 million
