Science Ch 3 Lesson 5 Outline

What are the life cycles of some plants?

I. Plant Life Cycles
     - life cycle: stages through which a living thing passes during its life
     A. All living things:
            1. change, usually beginning as something small and growing bigger
             2. they reproduce to make more of the same kind
             3. eventually they die
     - Most plants go through similar stages during their life cycles
     - Differences in life cycles can include the way they reproduce: seeds, spores, or cones

II. Life Cycle of a Flowering Plant:
    - Example: Pumpkin
    1. Germinating seed: happens when water, oxygen, and warm temperatures are present, stem grows up, roots grow down
    2. Growth: leaves grow & the plant makes sugar, it grows into an adult plant with flowers
    3. Pollination: some flowers make pollen, other flowers use that pollen to make seeds
    4. Adult Plant with Seeds: a fruit (pumpkin) is made/grown, the fruit has seeds inside, those seeds can become new plants

III. Life Cycle of a Conifer Plant:
    - Example: Pine trees
    1. Germinating seed: happens when water, oxygen, and warm temperatures are present, a seedling grows from the germinating seed
    2. Growth: takes many years, grows into a tall adult tree, makes small pollen cones & large seed cones
    3. Pollination: small pollen cones make pollen, wind carries the pollen to the large cones, where seeds are made
    4. Adult Plant with Seeds: seeds develop in the seed cones, then seeds fall to the ground when the cones open, those seeds can become new plants

IV. Other Plant Life Cycles
   1. Some plants have 2 kinds of life cycles. They can make seeds AND:
          A. use stems to grow a new plant (ex: strawberries)
          B. use roots to grow a new plant (ex: dandelions)
          C. use leaves to grow a new plant (ex: Kalanchoe)

V. Plant life cycle lengths vary greatly
     - Some take only a few weeks and others will have a one- or two-year life cycle
     - Trees live for a significantly longer time (175-3,000 years)

Ideas to reflect on:
 - How are the life cycles of flowering plants and conifer plants alike?
 - How do plants grow and change?
 - Will a fern and a flowering plant have the same life cycle?
 - Why do plants need to attract bees, hummingbirds, or butterflies to them?
 - What do you think causes some desert plants to have such a short life cycle?

Our Class Study of Photosynthesis!

This week in science we will be exploring the process that many plants use to make food - photosynthesis! We will be reading about, acting out, and watching videos about photosynthesis to help us explore and understand this process that most plants go through. If you are looking for further resources to enhance your at home studies or want to know what we will be up to this week, please check out the cool resources I've gathered below:

Pigometry!

Do you love geometry? Do you love Charlotte's Web? Room 14's students love both, so we created Pigometry Art-o-facts today!

Each student was given a ruler, construction paper, and directions from Catherine Jones Kuhns' wonderful book called Mathematical Art-o-Facts. The class loved measuring and constructing our pigs almost as much as we loved reading Charlotte's Web over the last several weeks. We hope you enjoy these pictures of our piggies and the yummy snacks we enjoyed yesterday while we watched Charlotte's Web!

Have a great Easter and we'll see everyone in a week!

California Indians Project

As many of you know the 3rd grade students have been working together in tribes for the past several weeks on their California Indians Projects. Many students have finished their power point presentations in class and just have their artifacts left to complete for our  "Indian Museum" which will be on display next weekend at Open House on January 27 from 1-3 PM. We will have 2 more 1 hour work periods in class this week on Tuesday & Thursday afternoon, so any students who have completed their power points are welcome to bring in their materials and work on their artifacts in class.

As we have been discussing in class, each student must complete an artifact that represents a tool, clothing item, jewelry, dwelling, or other artifact to represent things their tribe used or would have needed from their environment. Tribal groups should have a variety of artifacts to fill our museum, so please coordinate what you'll be making and bringing in with your other tribe members. We wouldn't want to have 30 spears and no baskets to represent all of our California Indian Tribes!

Below are some pictures, links with directions, and other project ideas for any students who are looking for inspiration. All artifacts are due on Thursday January 24th so that we can organize our museum in time for our big Open House reveal on Sunday.

Remember, the key is to MAKE something that is related to YOUR TRIBE :o)
